The United States was fast becoming the ‘melting pot’ of the world. The immigrants were pouring in from all corners of the globe in search of a better life in the ‘new world’. Much to great dismay to racial purists and some clergy members the five races of man began to inter-breed. Colonialist John Rolfe married Indian princess Pocahontas in Virginia in l6l4 after she saved the life of Captain John Smith, It is also a known fact that Thomas Jefferson, one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the Unites States, fathered children with female slaves that worked on his Monticello estate near Charlottesville Virginia. Obviously Mr. Jefferson took the roll of ‘founding father’ very serious. We are human being, which also means that we are still animals. Procreation is one of the top priorities on the minds of any animal to continue the species. But in certain areas of the United States laws were passed banning the practice of inter-racial sexual contact. The racial purists had won out, in some areas anyway. As the country continued to grow, three classes of people emerged. The upper class, those who owned everything, the middle class, those who worked for the upper class and the lower class, those for one reason or another didn’t own anything or work for anyone. As time moved on, political factions formed. The upper class, being pro-business, started the Republican Party. The middle-class, those that did the work, started the Democratic Party. Friction was inevitable. Members of both parties were born and raised here in the United States, but each group was weary of the other and its motives.
If you notice in my writings I do all I can, not to label citizens of the United States as American. If you get right down to it Canadians are Americans, so are Mexicans, Brazilians, Panamanians, on and on. We, along with all the citizens residing in the western hemisphere, the other countries of North and South America, are all technically American. I suppose that would make you and me, USians! But for one reason or another, the label of ‘American’ has been placed on citizens of our country and is accepted worldwide. So the two party systems were established splitting the country economically, morally and theoretically. The Republicans wanted all the wealth to be in their control. They wanted no government interference, unless it pertained to moral issues. Their minds and missions were very narrow, “this is mine and I want yours to become mine.” They have embraced the label of ‘conservatives’. The Democrats wanted everyone who worked to be able to share in the prosperity. An honest day’s pay, for an honest day’s work. They see government as kind of a referee to protect the common good of all of the people, not just those at the top of the food chain. Their minds and missions are broader in scope, “if you work hard you should be a part of the American dream.” They have embraced the label of “progressives”. With polarized philosophies and neither side willing to compromise the United States was on a collision course with destiny.
